The "L.D.R" or long distance release is discussed, tongue in cheek, by John Geirach in his book "Trout Bum."[2] In this technique the trout is released, without being handled, at a great distance from the fisher. This is usually the result of a fisher "asleep at the switch" combined with a overpowering trout and a tippet, one size too small. To use this technique, a surprised fisher allows a "lunker" trout to unceremoniously pull the line and walk with the fly trailing, to project the offering to a likely spot holding fish.
